Program Description

Event Details

In the early 1980s, Kevin Mallinson joined the Key West Fire Department. His dream of being a professional firefighter had come true. He hadn't imagined how being gay would threaten his fellow firefighters. Kevin became the target of fire and unrelenting homophobic assaults intended to force him out of the department. His story highlights the importance of personal values and a sense of humor when facing adversity.

Dr. Kevin Mallinson and his husband split their time between Washington, DC and Lewes, DE. Following his years in the Key West Fire Department, he attended nursing school. He received an associates degree in nursing from Florida Keys Community College (now the College of the Florida Keys), his BSN from the University of Miami and both his MSN and PhD in Nursing from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

This talk is free and open to the public. You do not have to have a Monroe County Public Library card to attend.

The talk is sponsored by the Monroe County Public Library, the Key West Business Guild and the Alex Vega Firehouse Museum.
