The Marathon Branch welcomes you to participate in a Love Poem Workshop hosted by local author, Susannah Simpson Friday, February 14th, at 2PM in our Community Room.
Writing a Love Poem: Listening to the Language of the Heart
The heart is a thousand stringed instrument that can only be tuned by love ~Hafiz
Whether you are in love now or not, in one form or another, we have all been the senders and recipients of love.
Why should we bother to try to write a love poem? Doesn’t Hallmark have the market cornered? Isn’t is easier to go to the card section and pick out a generic sentiment?
Nothing takes the place of a personal poem. As Mary Oliver said ”A poem is a life-cherishing force. For poems are not words, after all, but fires for the cold, ropes let down to the lost, something as necessary as bread in the pockets of the hungry. Yes indeed.”
Let us take time out of our busy, stressful lives to reflect and find a way to honor what and whom we truly love and perhaps even who has truly loved us.
This workshop is for anyone who wants to try their hand at writing a poem. No experience needed.
Everyone is welcome, seasoned poets, and non-poets alike!
During this workshop, you will read and hear love poems from a variety of cultures, historical, and societal perspectives. We will discover tools to access and express the language of the heart and will find various ways to “listen” to ourselves and to identify what and whom we truly love.
Whether it is a current or departed family member, friend, pet, past love, a child, favorite place, an element in nature, or a newfound love, this workshop will enable the participant to find an authentic means of expressing feelings of love in a poem format
At the conclusion of the session, you will have:
· Learned 3 classic definitions of love
· Will be able to make a personal distinction between different kinds of love,
· Will access and translate your authentic language of the heart
· Will be able to use basic couplet
